Recently, I was encouraged by the power God has entrusted to His people through the gift of intercession. This came during a two hour intercession set that we do weekly at IHOP Atlanta on Tuesdays 4-6PM.
We were praying for God to release understanding of the gospel to people as the kingdom of God is declared to them. Matthew 16 came to my mind where Jesus asks His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” The answer to this question is the key to the release of the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.
By revelation from the Father in heaven, Peter answers correctly that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. He is the anointed One David prophesied about in Psalm 2 who will have the nations as His inheritance.
In relation to Peter’s answer, Jesus told him:
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it -Matthew 16:18
Jesus builds His church on “the rock” of Himself as the anointed Savior of the world. This reminds me of the Psalms where the author(s) say, “The Lord is my rock” and similar phrases. When Jesus speaks of building the church, He has in mind people from every tribe, language, nation and tongue.
He went on to say to Peter,
“And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” -Matthew 16:19
In context, the keys of the kingdom of heaven involve intercession for the kingdom of heaven to penetrate the control of the evil one in every tribe across the earth. We pray in agreement with the correct identity of Jesus as the Christ for the Father to give Him the nations as His inheritance.
As the body of Christ we are the pillar and foundation of the truth, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. We are the given the keys of the kingdom to agree with God’s plans to bring His kingdom fully on earth as it is in heaven. We are given power to loose God’s purposes through agreement with Him and to bind the kingdom of darkness’ purposes. We do this on earth in intercession and God releases power from heaven.
The end result will be the gospel of the kingdom being preached to every tribe, Jesus returning, the salvation of Israel, the peace of Jerusalem and the merging together of heaven and earth.
