Contending for the Promises
Liz Robertson
May 11th, 2010

Today we are in the days just before the celebration of Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Church with power. Historically, these are the days the disciples plus about one hundred others were gathered in an upper room “to wait for the Promise of the Father” (Acts 1:4). This was not only a time of waiting, for they were also contending in prayer, as Acts 1:14 says, “These continued with one accord in prayer and supplication.” Jesus gave a command to wait, and yet this company understood the importance of partnering with the Father in prayer for what he had promised: the Holy Spirit.

We are in a similar moment, as the people were two thousand years ago. There is a synergy of the ages at work, calling God’s people to contend for his promises. This is a prophetic season, an invitation, to wait on the Lord and ask him for what he has promised.

This has both individual and corporate applications. We are to contend corporately for the promise of the outpouring of the Spirit in greater measures. At IHOP Atlanta, we have seen a taste of what the Lord wants to give his children in the things of the Spirit. The wine is being poured out: supernatural euphoric feelings of love and joy. Fire has accompanied this and many have been healed, from the headache, to chronic pain in joints, backs, vision, and emotional trauma (for more details, check out our testimonies). God is extending an opportunity to us to contend for more of his Spirit in greater levels.

There is also an invitation to pray fervently for individual promises. What has the Father promised you that has not yet come to fruition? What prophetic word was spoken over you that has not yet come to pass? First Timothy 1:18 says, “According to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare.” The Lord speaks to us prophetically to call us into relationship. He wants us to ask him for these things in confidence!

Now is the hour to “build [ourselves] up on [our] most holy faith” (Jude 20) and believe for the things the Father wants to release to us individually and as a family. This is a prophetic window of time that the Father is calling us to keep asking, seeking and knocking for the all the greater promises. The Lord will surely return for a Bride partnering with Him in faith, and I sure want to be a part of that company!
