Our New Nature
Nathanael Flock
May 21st, 2009

Last month I was compelled to write about the need to consistently identify ourselves as crucified, no longer seeing the cross of Jesus as something mostly substitutionary. God cannot and will not sanctify the old man who is "corrupted by deceitful desires" (Eph 4:22). Our problem is that we were born into sin (Psalm 51:5), and that sickness can't be healed - it must be put to death.

The story of Lazarus' death and resurrection has many awesome revelations of God's nature, but one lesson points to God's plans for true healing. When hearing that Lazarus was sick, Jesus said "This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it" (John 11:4). Jesus then waits to go to Bethany until Lazarus has died! This is a picture of God's process for us - true healing comes through death and resurrection. The sin nature was condemned by Jesus Christ on the cross (Rom 8:3), and so we must let Him take us there. This becomes easier as we meditate on the truths of His resurrection, so that "we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead" (2 Cor 1:9).

So then the question arises: how do I practically walk this out in this day and age?

We covered one major point last month, which is meditating on verses that declare us crucified with Christ, and receiving that truth as our own. Let us next consider the words written to the Galatians: "Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the Spirit." (Gal 5:24,25, italics mine)

Notice how Paul says "we must also follow the Spirit" immediately after saying we "have crucified the flesh." This tells me that our crucifixion is immediate upon reckoning, but progressive through the growing faith. We must reckon ourselves crucified with Christ, moment by moment and day by day, but it is the Spirit of Christ that applies the power of the cross to our walk, if we follow Him.

The "passions and desires" of Adam's fallen nature run deep, and are themselves deceivers (Eph 4:22) which cause corruption (2 Peter 1:4). This demands the daily calling to remembrance of our position in Christ - crucified and risen, and therefore subject to His new nature! This new nature is not like Adam's nature. Romans 5 tells us that Adam was to be the prototype, or preliminary model, of the Coming One, Jesus Christ. However, sin made Adam, and unfortunately us, the antitype, or opposite, of the True Son. This is where the Holy Spirit comes in.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Son (Gal 4:6), and now gives us a new heart cry "Abba, Father!" Our old nature has deceitful passions and desires, but now our desire is to be conformed to the likeness of the Son. The Holy Spirit is the only Guide who can take us from slavery to true sonship, for "all those led by God's Spirit  are God's sons" (Rom 8:14).

I believe the Lord is inviting His Church into the journey of following the Spirit, not as a hobby, but as the pursuit of our identity and purpose! He is our new nature - we have been removed from the wilted brier bush of Adam, and placed in the heavenly Vine of Jesus Christ, and now receive His Holy Spirit like a branch receives the sap of a vine. For a branch, there is no life, no fruit, and no purpose without sap; so where are we without the "Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead"?

This is my prayer: Father, thank you for the true healing that came through Your Son's death and resurrection. I am so thankful for the Holy Spirit, the Life-Giving Spirit, who gives us new passions, new desires, and that which you purposed for your children before time began. By the Spirit, lead us into true freedom from our old nature every day. I ask Your Church to be possessed by the awesome Spirit of Love, and removed from distractions of the spirit of this age. Spirit, I love You. Come be my Teacher and Life, and lead me to the day of Jesus Christ's appearing without spot or blemish just as He is pure and white. Amen.
