The Father Wants to Laugh and Play

God is from everlasting to everlasting. Uncreated. He has no beginning and no end. He has been forever and forever will be.  I know those lofty statements are difficult to wrap your mind around, but they're true nonetheless.

What's interesting is that the Scripture actually gives us a glimpse into what God was doing before He created the universe. The Bible uses phrases like, "Before time began", "Before the world was", "Before there was ever an earth" that all describe this season of existence...when it was just God.

What was that like, when it was just God -- perfect, glorious, self existent, in that vast expanse before He created time.  Three in One, exalted, relating within the God-head, flowing in love with Himself. It makes me wonder...what exactly was He doing?  The answer is simple. God was doing what God does best...enjoying Himself.

"God was enjoying Himself?" I know that sounds a little strange, but bear with me. Because if that's true (and it is), immediately you have to ask, "How?" How was God enjoying Himself  and what are the implications of that? The answer leads us into a revelation of His heart that will change your view of God.

Proverbs 8 & John 17 give us some insight.

Joh 17:24 ... for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Pro 8:23, 30-31 I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth... 30  Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, 31 Rejoicing in His inhabited world, And my delight was with the sons of men.

In John 17, Jesus references the fact that He and the Father flowed in love together before the world was formed. In Proverbs 8 we get a little more detail of what their interactions looked like.

Proverbs 8 offers us a picture of wisdom personified. It's wisdom who is describing the time of existence before creation. Many commentators agree that wisdom in this passage represents Jesus, for Jesus has been made to us wisdom from God(1 Cor 1:30). So it's as if the Son of God is describing the pre-creation existence He, the Father and the Spirit shared.

Notice in verse 30 He says, "I was daily His(the Father's) delight, Rejoicing always before Him." Daily the Father was enjoying the Son. What sweet intimacy they shared. Now, I want you to draw your attention to the word "rejoicing." In Hebrew it's the word "sachaq." It literally means "to laugh." It's translated laugh, play, amuse, celebrate, joke, & rejoice .

Could it be ... The Father & Son spent their time laughing and playing together before the creation of the world? The answer is a resounding YES. What does this reveal to us about the heart of the Father toward His Son? Furthermore, what does it say about His heart toward ALL of His children?

In light of this consider Ephesians 1:4-5.

Eph 1:4-5  He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world...  5 having predestined us to adoption as sons ... according to the good pleasure of His will,

When God looked for inspiration to make the created order, He looked within Himself. It was in the season of delight, laughter and play with the Son that the Father considered the "good pleasure of His will." In other words He though to Himself, "what will make me the most happy & pleased?" It was in that time of delight and joy that He dreamed of you and purposed in Himself to create you and adopt you as His own child.

When comparing Proverbs 8 with Ephesians 1, the source for God's inspiration becomes evident. He was enjoying Himself so much, He decided He wanted to enjoy you. In other words, the laughter and play that He and the son shared was SO GOOD, He wanted to laugh and play with you. Yes Beloved, that is why He made you, to enjoy you, to laugh and play with you. He is that good, tender and fun. God's purpose for creating you is to enjoy you and that you would enjoy Him, rejoicing(i.e. laughing and playing) all the way.

This is your portion, this is your purpose. The Father wants to laugh and play. Let this truth guide your heart through the mundaneness, challenges & trials of this age. He's not trying to get you to perform better, work harder, or strive for His approval. He's not ultimately trying to teach you a lesson. There's one thing that He wants you to know. You've been created to be loved. And from that truth all the other realities of life are to flow. Let this change your view of God. No matter what we go through this truth remains, the Father made you to enjoy you -- He wants to laugh and play.
