Eph 4:1415 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,
Truth and Love always go together. Biblically, we don’t find any room for truth devoid of love, nor do we find room for love devoid of truth. The two are woven together in one and thus eternally linked. As such, truth and love together form the perfect prescription for growth in righteousness. By speaking and hearing truth laden in love, we grow up in Christ.
Too often believers have offered loveless truth and in doing so have turned away many would-be seekers. At other times we have offered a love that is shallow on truth, accepting everyone while affirming their sinful state and never calling them to repentance. Neither is what the Bible prescribes for us.
Love demands that we speak the truth and truth demands that speak in love.
Loveless truth is ultimately worthless. Consider Paul’s words in 1 Cor 13:2, “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge … but have not love, I am nothing.”
On the other hand “truthless” love is equally as fruitless. Love “does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth (1 Cor 13:6).”
If I love you I am bound by love to tell you the truth, even if it hurts a little. And if I am bound to tell you the truth, I must do it in a spirit of gentleness and love, expressing the very heart of Jesus. Love and truth always go together. We can’t have one without the other, for each would be incomplete.
